The 5th Annual Pediatric Low Grade Glioma week at Camp Sunshine welcomed 40 families from 7 different states around the country. A dozen new families experiencing PLGG week for the first time joined returning families for a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and rekindle old friendships!

The week at Camp Sunshine focuses on enabling PLGA families to enjoy a typical overnight camp experience in the beautiful mountains of Maine, but there is so much more! Dr. Keith Ligon, Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School Principal Investigator, Center for Molecular Oncologic Pathology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Hospital, visited Camp Sunshine for the first time and  treated the families to an interactive presentation regarding Precision Medicine and PLGA Targeted Therapies. In addition, Dr. Evan Hecker, Director of API at Spero Therapeutics, and father of a child battling PLGA, discussed  PLGA Scientific Progress over the past decade. He also shared details about his family’s PLGA journey and why he is ‘giving back’ to AKBTC (PLGA Foundation), both as a fundraiser and as a Parent Liaison in the drug development arena. Dr. Hecker’s presentation can be viewed here

Testimonials from families that attended the PLGA session confirm that PLGG week is a unique opportunity for these families to connect with a community of others that understand their struggles. One family wrote “PLGA Week allowed our family to realize that we are not alone. Connecting with others from the PLGA community is our greatest achievement…” and another commented “This was our first time attending PLGA week at Camp Sunshine and we are so glad we had the opportunity to be here. Connecting with other PLGA parents was so helpful to us on many levels, sharing treatment stories and medical news, encouraging and being encourages as we navigate post-treatment side effects and life! Most importantly, the sense of belonging and ability to interact with so many others on a similar brain tumor journey was priceless!” Based on these reactions and many more, PLGG Week at Camp Sunshine will be back in 2017! Stay tuned for details.
